It
is theorized that the Type 3 antenna used bare wire on the loop so
that the radio operator or maintenance technician could rapidly short
out turns to assist in tuning the antenna to a higher frequency.
Most of the Type 3 antennas were mounted inside the glass cockpit
easily accessible by the crew.
