In
most cases the HC18 will fit inside the FT-243 without modifying the interiror
of the FT-243Links at the bottom of this page.
Completely
remove the copper pads and their connections from the pins of the FT-243
Shape the HC18 leads and fit in the FT-243. I scrape the
leads carefully to provide a solid solder base.
I
check activity and the approximate frquency of the crystal before proceeding.
Looks
good 
After testing in your transmitter and making a final determination
of the frequency then stamp on the inside of the FT-243 cover. 
springs, old crystal, old metal pads and copper pads back in. They
won't fit.
